CHAPTER THIRTEEN
âYouâre not listening! No, damn it! If you would just listen for oneâI did verify the information! Well, no, I didnât tell them. Why would I tell them? What would the police do but complicate things? Will you listen to me? Can I speak? Or do you simply want to shout loudly how disappointed you are in me?â
Tyler felt a little bit like a child listening to a classmate argue with a teacher. He sat on the bed with his hands folded and tried to look anywhere but at Anya as she paced back and forth in front of the desk, carrying the phone with her.
He could only hear one side of Anyaâs conversation with her supervisor, but it didnât sound like a conversation between an agent and a superior. It sounded more like a petulant child arguing with her father.
âI am being careful! For Godâs sake, what do you think this is? Childrenâs playtime? I have to take risks. That is part of the job. Oh, my mistake. For a moment, I thought you actually cared about me and not just this job.â
That really didnât sound like a talk with a supervisor. Tyler frowned and paid attention to Anyaâs body language. Aside from the pacing, her shoulders were bunched, and her arms closed tightly over her chest. She wore a petulant frown, and tears shone in her eyes.
Tyler had spent his childhood and youth wanting to follow in his fatherâs footsteps until he saw the end of the path his father walked. Had his father not reached that end, Tyler could see himself having a conversation like this with him.
Could it be that Anya had followed in her fatherâs footsteps? The idea seemed outlandish, but so did the idea of working with a Russian spy.
She looked his way, and he offered her a supportive smile. She rolled her eyes and looked away.
Okay, no smiling. Got it.
âHe is fine, sir. We work well together. I canât talk about that right now. Yes, I am learning things. I will tell you later.â
Tyler frowned at that. Now it sounded like a conversation with a supervisor, specifically, a supervisor who wanted to know what information his agent was gleaning from the enemy agent she was observing.
âWe are trying to find this Heinrich Muller. You remember the Nazi I asked you to research? We believe he is responsible for everything that has happened in Berlin so far. We think he is trying to put the United States and the Soviet Union at war. No, Iâm notââ she lowered her voice, probably so Tyler couldnât hear, but one talent he did have was the ability to understand soft whispers and filter out any background noise that would prevent him from understanding it.
âListen, father, he is here right now. I canât talk about everything. I can tell you that things are not going well, but we have a plan. We donât need any more support. Do not send Ivan.â
So it was her father. That was interesting.
